Google Nest Reimagined
Reimagining the Google Nest thermostat as a premium, forward looking product for early adopters.
UI/UX

Project Overview

Goal: Using the current Nest Thermostat and Google Home app as reference, our goal was to create a cohesive, high end interface across the device and mobile app.
Year Created: 2026
My Role: UI and Visual Lead
Katch It is a bus app by students for students to help them track their buses around campus. It allows students to input their own school schedule to track their buses throughout the week. As the Visual and UI Lead for this project I contributed to the illustrations, design guidelines, and notifications, while also providing visual feedback throughout the app's development.

The Challenge:
Current Nest Features
Existing thermostat and app features were assessed to find where the experience felt disconnected or harder to use than it should be.

Research:
Understanding The Market
User testing showed our two core audiences wanted opposite things: hands off automation or deep control. Every design decision had to serve both.
Ideation:
Warming Up
Initial brainstorming and exploration for the visual design.
Moodboard:
Early Sketches:
Iteration 1
Wireframing and Initial Visual Design
Early exploration for both the thermostat and the mobile app.

Iteration 2

Iteration 3

Final Designs:
Brand Guide
To keep the experience cohesive across the thermostat and app, I created a brand guide defining the visual system: the warm, dark frosted glass style, the orange and blue gradients that shift with heating and cooling, typography, and UI components. It gives the team a single reference for every screen.
Final Solution: Mobile App
The app puts the thermostat front and center with a rotating dial that mirrors the hardware. Scheduling inspired by Google Calendar and a built in Gemini assistant let users plan in seconds or dial in something far more specific.

Final Solution: Thermostat
From a distance, Farsight displays a bold gradient reflecting the current mode and temperature. Step closer and it transitions to the full home screen. Users rotate the dial through a radial menu for mode, schedule, hold timer, eco mode, fan, metrics, and settings, and can build schedules right on the device.
